Infestation levels of the gall midge Asphondylia floriformis (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) on its host plant Sarcocornia quinqueflora (Chenopodiaceae)

Galls induced by Asphondylia floriformis Veenstra-Quah & Kolesik larvae are known to prevent the development of vegetative buds and inhibit seed formation, and are frequently found on its host Sarcocornia quinqueflora Bunge ex Ung.-Sternb.) A.J.Scott growing in coastal saltmarshes in Victoria. The degree of infestation was found to be greater at sites in the Westernport Bay region than at Swan Bay on the Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. Lower infestation levels appear to be attributedtodifferences in host plant cover, with more prolific growth of S. quinqueflora on French Island and Swan Bay providing the gall midge with more potential oviposition sites. Synchronicity between the gall midge life cycle and its host plant phenology was apparent over a 12 month period. Increased temperature alone does not appear to influence initiation and duration of gall formation.
